Membership Policies

Borrowing Guidelines
  • Sign up for a membership by showing proof of address and identity. Anyone in the Finger Lakes region may borrow toys so long as they are willing to come to our Ithaca location to check them out and return them on time and in good condition.
  • Members may borrow 3 toys at a time per membership, or one per child, whichever is greater.
  • Toys may be borrowed for a period of up to 3 Weeks. Please return toys on time.
  • Toys may be renewed after the initial three week period for one additional loan period. Request a renewal by sending an email with your name to: amber.smith@fingerlakestoylibrary.org
  • Toys will only be lent after the Waiver of Liability is signed. Responsibility lies solely in the hands of the caregiver to provide safety in play.
  • Your membership includes access to our online catalogue, run by Lend Engine. You will receive a welcome email with sign-in information and you will then be able to view all of our toys, your current loans, as well as have the ability reserve toys online. You can find the online catalogue here:

Late Fees, Missing Parts, and Broken Toys
  • Late fees of 75 cents per toy, per day will be charged (fees are only assessed on days that the toy library is open). Once a member's late fees exceed $10, membership will be suspended until payment is received. Only cash is accepted for late fees.
  • Potential fees for missing parts and broken toys will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
  • Membership may be suspended if fees are accumulated and remain unpaid.

How to Care for Toys at Home
  • Please designate a special place in your home where toy library toys will live while they are not being played with. This would ideally be a place separate from where toys you own are kept.
  • Please keep track of toy parts and pieces while playing and make sure all parts are accounted for when putting the toy away. You can view the components of each of the toys you borrow in your Lend Engine account online.
  • Please keep toy library toys away from food and beverages.
  • Please take good care of toys while they are in your care so that all children in our community may continue to enjoy them.
  • Members are asked to not clean toys in their own homes (to prevent damage to the toys), simply return the toy and we will take care of the rest! Because our toys are circulated around the community they will need extra care and cleaning. We will use environmentally-friendly methods to clean all of our toys.
  • If a toy in your care is exposed to a biohazard (blood, feces, vomit) please seal it in a plastic bag and inform the librarian when you return it so proper precautions can be taken.

Membership Fees

Membership fees allow members access to hundreds of toys, and they help pay for the toy library’s necessary operating expenses, such as rent, utilities, cleaning supplies, and insurance. We strive to offer membership free of charge to everyone in the community, and will continue to fundraise with that goal in mind. For now, we hope that everyone who wants to borrow toys will choose to become a member, so please do not let financial concern get in your way. Feel free to contact us with any questions.Membership fees are on a sliding scale and all payments are kept confidential. Please pay what you can honestly afford, even if that is zero. There is no minimum. If you would like suggested guidelines based on income, please ask. We look forward to lending toys to you and to all members of the community!

If you are a business or an organization interested in a membership please contact us.

The mission of Finger Lakes Toy Library is to improve quality of life by increasing access to toys, supporting play, and encouraging a culture of reuse and sharing.
